Discover the Power of Reading: Promote Literacy in Your Community. Open Door Family Medical Centers need volunteer readers for our Reach Out and Read early literacy waiting room program. Our volunteers read aloud to young patients, discuss the importance of reading aloud with parents, and distribute age-appropriate books. Anyone over 14 years of age is eligible and will be provided with an orientation and training designed to familiarize our volunteers with our facility, the mission of the program, and how to approach and connect with our patients. This is an excellent opportunity to develop skills for communicating with children and families, promote a love of reading, make a difference in YOUR community! We have volunteer time-slots available Monday-Saturday in all four of our sites (Ossining, Mt. Kisco, Sleepy Hollow and Port Chester). For more information, please contact the Reach Out and Read Coordinators: Charlotte Baughman and Jenny Palacio, cbaughman@ood.org or jpalacio@ood.org (914) 502-1355 or (914) 502-1355.
Furniture SharehouseFurniture Sharehouse collects your gently-used furniture and makes sure it gets directly to needy Westchester families who are moving out of homeless shelters, escaping domestic violence, reuniting after foster care or recovering from personal or natural disasters. Since 2007, they have distributed over 21,000 items free of charge to over 4,200 individuals, half of them children, helping them fill their empty apartments and stabilize their lives. The need is great, and the waiting list for an appointment is six-weeks long, so please consider donating your furniture and/or making a monetary donation to help us "make a house a home" for Westchester families. www.furnituresharehouse.org
RiverkeeperRiverkeeper fights David-and-Goliath battles for your right to safe, drinkable water and a healthy Hudson. We need your help to win these battles. Here are just a few things we could do with your support for Riverkeeper: Donations to our Watershed Program will help us take the battle over fracking right to the oil and gas industry, which is trying to profit from New York’s natural resources at terrible cost to our water quality and quality of life. Support our Hudson River Program and our Close Indian Point campaign and we’ll fight for the clean energy solutions that we New Yorkers so desperately need to replace old, ecologically-destructive power plants. With your help, our Patrol Boat will be back on the Hudson, testing water quality, nailing polluters and protecting your right to enjoy the river safely. Visit www.riverkeeper.org
The Volunteer CenterOn any given day of the year, somewhere in our own community, a family goes hungry, a child struggles to succeed in the classroom, a woman tries to flee an abusive relationship, an older adult suffers alone, a displaced worker requires a fresh skills set. Your donation ensures a volunteer match can be made every day, 365 days a year. Your support of The Volunteer Center makes it possible for a volunteer to respond to those in need, even as the needs grow stronger. Contributions from individuals - such as yourself - help The Volunteer Center to make meaningful volunteer connections. We identify the needs in the community and match them with dedicated individuals eager to serve. Last year, The Volunteer Center engaged more than 18,000 volunteers who helped over 500 local nonprofits fulfill their missions to improve the quality of life for residents in Westchester and Putnam Counties. Every dollar you donate generates seven dollars in services to your community. Visit www.volunteer-center.org
